Emmyegwemi: Unknowingly to many, Sidney Osioh’s journey into art didn’t follow a straight line, it followed a foundation. His early years at Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic, where he earned his National Diploma, were about discipline: learning to see, to draw, to respect form and process. It was there that his relationship with structure began, long before distortion ever entered the conversation.
At Auchi Polytechnic, where he completed his Higher National Diploma in Painting, the grounding became deeper. Auchi didn’t just teach him how to paint; it taught him why rules exist. Classical techniques, rigorous studio practice, and an almost stubborn attention to fundamentals shaped his hand and trained his eye.
What looks intuitive in his work today is, in fact, the result of years of deliberate learning.
So when Sidney eventually began to bend form, fragment bodies, and challenge visual expectations, it wasn’t rebellion, it was permission earned. He didn’t break the rules out of ignorance; he broke them because he understood them. And that understanding is what gives his work both freedom and authority.
